DWR Champagne Chair: 2004 - Chicago Apartment
Every year Design Within Reach holds a contest to design a miniature chair from a champagne cork. My idea was to re-cast powdered glass from the bottle into little strips on a wire and make a chaise, using the very tip of the cork as a pillow. The key though was that I wanted to distill or boil off the champagne until it was just a powder, but I forgot that heating a liquid full of sugar would only caramelize into a wicked black tar. Still determined to make a chair, I poured the horrid goop into a cup to let it cool and stuck some legs on it. At least I made it into their news letter!
